More Romney straw poll hijinks

Well, we're less than a week away from the Ames Straw Poll, so you know Mitt Romney-- that famous straw poll manipulator-- and his team (some of whom are outright straw poll fraudsters) had to be up to something, right?

Yeah, well, they are. From Marc Ambinder:

A Republican county chairman in Iowa wants to punish presidential candidates who decided to opt out of next weekend's GOP straw poll in Ames. Hardin County chair Andy Cable won't invite these candidates' representatives to political meetings in his county, denying them valuable opportunities to recruit activists.

[...]

But Cable has a potential conflict of interest. He is also a paid organizer for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

On June 11, Mr. Cable sent an e-mail to representatives of former candidate Jim Gilmore, Sen. John McCain and ex-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani. McCain and Giuliani announced that month that they would not spend millions to try and win the Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 11.

"As Chairman of the Hardin County Iowa Republicans I would like to have my name removed from any of your mailing lists," Cable writes. "Since you have chosen to sidestep an important part of the state Republican caucus process and thus show non support of loyal Iowan caucus goers I wish to ask you to have my name removed from your mailing lists and to inform you that your candidate and any representatives will not be invited to any Hardin County Central Committee meetings or local Republican functions. These are open only to those candidates that respect our system."

A copy of Cable's e-mail was obtained from an Iowa Republican.

Mr. Cable has publicly endorsed Romney and is among those Republicans Romney's campaign has paid $3,000 for "GOTV Consulting."
(my emphasis added)

Apparently, Mr. Cable sees no conflict of ...

Romney hearts Hezbollah???

From MSNBC:

Romney is lucky the press has been kicking around Obama this week – otherwise his statement below about Hezbollah would be receiving A LOT more attention. “At a town hall meeting in Iowa last Friday, Mitt Romney offered an eye-catching twist on his usual stump speech when he held up Hezbollah as a model for the effectiveness of using social services as a way to win hearts and minds. ‘Did you notice in Lebanon what Hezbollah did? Lebanon became a democracy some time ago. And while their government was getting underway, Hezbollah went into southern Lebanon and provided health clinics to some of the people there and schools. And they built their support by having done so,’ Romney said. ‘That kind of diplomacy is something that would help America become stronger around the world and help people understand that our interest is an interest toward modernity and goodness and freedom for all people of the world.’”

Hmmm. My two cents: first, Romney's made a really stupid, novice error in thinking you can say "hey, check out Hezbollah, they did some cool stuff" and get away with it, no matter what your intentions were (and, as is usual when Romney sticks his foot in his mouth, his team have had to provide "context" for this remark). Second, from my experiences living, working and traveling abroad extensively (and in the latter case, in the Middle East, including Lebanon which, as to my knowledge, Romney has never visited), while there may be a point that people like groups that do nice things for them, I have a strong suspicion that had the US decided years ago to go into unfriendly bits of the Middle East and build hospitals and give away TVs and toaster ovens, that wouldn't have done the trick. Because, you see, a lot of people in that region have a problem with Israel, in some cases because they don't trust Jews, and in some cases because t...

Anyone else find it interesting...

... that Rudy decided to tout his health care plan, which was helped to be crafted by an opponent of RomneyCare and is totally unlike RomneyCare, in Romney's hometown paper?

It seems that people on the Giuliani team understand the term "in your face." I love it!

UPDATE: RCPhas video up of Romney talking health care, getting hammered by a few people. Watch it-- it's interesting. Not least because Romney says in there that you get subsidized care if you earn less than $54k (and you have a family of four) , but fails to mention that if you earn $55k and you have to buy your own insurance for you and your family, it costs about $11k. Which is one of the many things that sucks about his plan.
